Day 3: GO on Winter Retreat

”This is the way; walk in it”

Take a second to think back to those last few days of summer leading up to the start of this semester. Were you scrambling to pack all your clothes? Were you stressing about the exams and papers you hadn’t even been assigned yet? Were you working to save up just a little more money to get you through the upcoming semester? Or were you doing things that you enjoy, soaking up those last days of freedom for yourself? I think most of us could respond to one (or all) of these questions with a “Yup, that was me!”

I know the days leading up to a new semester aren’t always as enjoyable for me as I often hope they will be. I feel like I tend to step away from the way that God wants me to walk into them. I don’t spend as much time with Him, I have too many things to get done on my list. I’m not serving Him, I deserve my last few days off. I don’t feel His peace, I’m anxious about the semester ahead. I don’t show His love, I’m irritable from my lack of sleep and accumulating stress. Maybe your life looks that way too. Perhaps you, too, find yourself running in fifteen different directions rather than taking a step back and preparing your heart for the fifteen weeks ahead.

Isaiah 30:21 says, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” What I love about this passage is that God understands that sometimes we get caught up in the craziness of life, sometimes we take a few more wrong turns to try to maximize time for ourselves and keep everything under control before the semester sets in. Sometimes we leave the path that He has for us, just as the people of Jerusalem did. What I love even more about this passage is the reminder in the second part of the verse. We just need to stop and listen for God saying, “This is the way; walk in it”.

Now think what it would be like if you intentionally took those last few days to really listen to God showing you the direction He wants you to walk in throughout the semester ahead? What if you took that time to refocus and refresh your relationship with Jesus? What if you did that while enjoying the freedom to relax and have fun with friends? And enjoying skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowshoeing, and quaint-little-town strolling? You have that opportunity sitting right in front of you – Cru’s Winter Retreat!
