Abiding in The I Am
We have spent the last two weeks in our large group meeting studying the first half of John chapter 15. This text has introduced us to the teaching theme for the first half of the semester, “Abiding in the I Am.” There are two concurrent ideas contained in this theme. First, there is the idea of abiding (to remain, to dwell, to stay vitally connected) to Christ. The second idea is, if we are to abide in Christ, then we should probably know something about who He is. So who is Jesus? Well, the are a number of times in John’s gospel account where Jesus is recorded as saying, “I am ____________.” The I am statements clue us into aspects of who Jesus is. In the weeks to come, we will explore each ‘I Am” statement individually to paint a picture for us regarding the Jesus we are to abide in.
Just by way of review, here are the main points from the message on John 15:1-2.
Jesus is the unfailing, unwavering, unparalleled source of life to be vitally connected to. (v. 1 “I am the true vine…)
God is fully invested in the success, fruitfulness and flourishing of his people! (v. 2 “…while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”)
God’s pruning is a reason for praise. (cf. Philippians 1:6 “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”)
We hope you can join us on Thursday nights at 7:30 in Wilbur Cross as we continue this series.
